Xavier Agote has used archaeological findings from Labrador to rebuild a 16th century Basque whaling galleon.
He hopes to go on an authentic voyage in 2028 from Pasaia to Red Bay.
There is also some interesting colonial politics at play. The basques appear to have had good relationships with the Innu of Labrador, possibly since they weren’t coming to stay. But the Inuit not so much. They have requested an apology from the Basques, but are participating in a relationship – including bringing examples of Inuit boat-building to Pasaia!
