Fresh Content: new ECAMP article from Tom

Tom has authored a new article for the Edmonton City as Museum Project. Read all about collective bargaining among the HBC’s boatmen in 1853!

  1. Hello Tom, I hope this note finds you and Barbara keeping well. I enjoyed reading your latest post about the HBC. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Although I didn’t send you a note back then, I also read with interest your series about traditional vessels, including York Boats and Hawaii’s Hokule’a! While I was recently enjoying a few weeks at my Honolulu timeshare, the Star Advertiser newspaper on January 19, 2025, featured the Hokule’a in an article about her upcoming celebration of 50 years of voyaging (March 8th). I brought the clippings home and would be please to mail them to you if you would like to see them.

Although I paused my volunteering at Fort Edmonton Park this past year due to “downsizing” from my home to a condo, I am looking forward to returning to the Park this coming season. Miss you!

    Warm regards, Marla

PS: At the bottom of the Jan. 30th HBC article, I noticed a spelling error (?) for Orkney Islands in the notes:

Métis are the post-contact Indigenous people of the prairies with a distinct culture and languages. Orkadians are from the *Orkeny Islands *north of Scotland, and a prime recruiting ground for the HBC. Before 1867, “Canadians” or “Canadiens” was generally used by the HBC to refer to French-speaking settlers from Lower Canada (later Canada East).
