Interpretive Trainer: Joshua Carlson

Joshua Carlson has consulted with Northwind since 2023. Joshua has worked as an educator in both schools and museums completing degrees in History, Museum Studies, Teaching English as a Second Language and Special Needs Education.  Joshua currently works as a Learning Facilitator at E2 Academy for twice exceptional children, in addition to which he has worked as an educational assistant at Community Options and ABC Head Start. 

Joshua also has an extensive background in museums, having worked as an educator for, The Alberta Legislative Assembly, Fort Edmonton Park, the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, Telus World of Science, the Alberta Aviation Museum, the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes, and the Clarington Museum and Archives.

Recently Joshua has created a program using Dungeons and Dragons to teach a broad range of subjects to neurodivergent children and has run a summer program allowing neurodivergent youth to socialize in a safe and fun way. Joshua is passionate about making learning spaces inclusive for all and helping museums become places that are at the forefront of that movement.


OPEN TO ALL: Tools for Inclusivity and Accessibility for Neurodiverse Audiences in Heritage Interpretation

Inclusion is not just about learners with special needs. It is an attitude and approach that embraces diversity and learner differences and promotes equal opportunities for all learners. How can your team better meet the needs of children with autism, ADHD, or other challenges? This presentation will provide an introduction to the principles of Universal Design Learning and give some tools for creating great guest experiences for neurodiverse individuals and groups.
